Are all the dogs in class instructed together?
No, each dog is instructed by the trainer individually in a group class setting. Each team will be given instructions based on the goals of the owner. All dogs are on leash and no greetings are allowed unless consented by all parties.
Please have your dog in a muzzle if they have a bite history.
Is my dog too young to join?
A position statement on early socialization in puppies released in by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior encourages veterinarians to recommend puppies be socialized before the vaccine series is complete. The guidelines state puppies can start socialization classes as early as 7 to 8 weeks of age. In general, they should receive a minimum of one set of vaccines at least seven days prior to the first class as well as a first deworming. Additionally, puppies should show no signs of illness during the classes and should be kept up-to-date on vaccines throughout the class. While veterinarians are appropriately concerned about infectious disease in young puppies, the fact is that behavioral issues—not infectious diseases—are the number one cause of death for dogs under 3 years of age, according to the AVSAB. Veterinarians contribute to these behavioral issues when recommending pets be kept away from possible germs until their vaccine series is complete, the AVSAB stated. “Puppies go through a sensitive period of socialization when they are uniquely prepared to benefit from exposure to social opportunities. From the time the owner adopts the puppy until 3 to 4 months of age, it is critical that the owner get the puppy out to meet other animals and people, and experience many different kinds of environments,” said AVSAB president, Dr. E. Kathryn Meyer. |

Class Rules and General Tips:
1
Pack your dog’s favorite treats, so that your dog will be more comfortable taking food they are used to. Think the higher the value, the more motivated they will be.
2
Make sure your dog is food motivated to learn new skills and build confidence while creating positive associations. This is the main technique we use to guide dog’s through the class when they are first learning it. You can test this if you’re dog or puppy is taking food in your neighborhood, away from your house the day of class.
3
Allow your dog and the other dogs in class have their own space. Have control of your dog and keep them at a safe distance.
4
Have available pockets in your clothing or a treat pouch/bag for convenience- one that you like wearing during class and is secure.
5
Pack your dog’s favorite toy to use as a reward and a motivator.
6
If your dog is nervous with other people and or dogs, then please arrive 10 minutes early for class so that Kate can get you both acclimated for training. Aggressive dogs must be muzzled before exiting the car and entering the grass area or indoor class room.
7
Your dog cannot be off leash in the parking lot, on the outside grounds or inside the classroom, without the trainer’s permission.
8
Walk your dog on the outside grounds for at least 5 minutes before entering class, so they are less likely to have an accident in class.
9
This class is geared towards adults and loyalty training for their dogs. Children are welcome, but must remain in the waiting area while class is being conducted.
