Puppy Basics is a great program because it sets you and your dog up to train in any environment and to do more Advanced Obedience on your own and only schedule for sessions as needed.
The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Test & Certification stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and Responsibility.
To receive certification the owner and puppy attend at least 6 classes by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator (us!) The owner (you!) brings bags to classes for cleaning up after puppy and as well you have obtained some form of ID for puppy- collar tag, etc.
To pass the test your puppy must:
Be free of aggression toward people and other pups during the class, tolerate the collar or body harness of owner’s choice and be hugged or held by owner, allow a treat or a toy to be taken away by owner, allow (in any position) petting by a person other than the owner, allow owner to handle and do a brief exam of pup’s ears and feet, walk on a leash and follow owner in a straight line, walk by other people on a leash, sits and lays down on command (treats are ok!), come to owner from when name is called, and lastly stay on a leash with another person while owner walks 10 steps and returns.
You book us as you want. There is no amount of sessions we require. Payment is required at the end of every session. We take all forms of payment. Cancelations are $40 if the session is missed, however if you give us 72 hours heads up the fee is waived.
Puppy Basics is a training program primarily for dogs under 6 months of age.
The primary goal is teaching you how to best communicate with your new puppy and to provide education and a unique curriculum to ensure your puppy’s success. We work one-on-one with our clients and their dogs to implement the basic commands of obedience and the common puppy challenges you will face together.
The average program from start to graduation is about 3 to 10 sessions.
Once you bring your puppy home- we recommend starting immediately on crate training (recommended usually, but optional), potty training, preventing separation anxiety and focusing on socialization with people and dogs after they have had their first round of shots and being dewormed twice.
These will be an introduction and Generalization of the following Commands.
🐾 Environmental socialization with people & dogs
🐩 Potty training
📈 Confidence building exercises
🏠 Crate training (if applicable)
🚫 Nipping and biting hands, clothes, and/or ankles
✖ Whining and barking
🐕 Destructive chewing
↗️ Pawing and nudging (they must respect your space)
🐕 Demand/attention seeking behaviors
💡 Place training on bed or cot
🚩 Imprinting and Generalization of the 5 Commands of Obedience: sit, walking with you on leash, stay, come and down
Our top priority in your puppy’s critical socialization period is positively exposing them with nearly EVERYTHING your puppy will encounter with or without you in the future including nail trims, applying vaccines, people, dogs, cats, children’s play grounds, umbrellas, other puppies, lightning (Florida is the capitol of the world), fireworks, city noises, driving in cars and baths.
For low drive who do not have the best appetite’s we will use alternative motivators like verbal praise, personal play, object play (toys), and physical praise (all the pets!) We will recommend and propose training equipment such as various gear for your puppy such as harnesses, leashes and enrichment activities and ideas, toys, collars along with methods of training and managing your new family member.
Take your skills to the next level and get certified! This course will prepare you and your pet to take the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test.
