pawz-tive dog training

PUPPY BASICS

WHAT GOALS WILL BE PRIORITIZED?
Obedience, Socialization, Relationship Development, Relaxation Protocols, Confidence Building, Implementing Social Boundaries, Canine Enrichment and Fulfillment, Nutrition, Confidence Building, Potty on Command.

The most crucial aspects are educating everyone and showing you the optimal ways to interact with your new puppy.

Kate will concentrate on refining your handling skills and the mechanics of the leash. She will cover a wide array of commands adding more distractions at more advanced levels as you progress in your sessions.

WHAT IF MY PUPPY NEEDS BEHAVIOR MODFICATION?

This is also for puppies who may be facing challenges with the following: anxiety, severe social attachments, phobias, fears, reactivity on and off leash (barking, whining, lunging, jumping, attacks) showing warning signs or exhibiting clear aggression, resource guarding and territorial behavior.

We offer Baby Prep training to help better prepare your puppy for your new arrival.

WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING METHODS/AND TOOLS DO YOU USE?

We employ a variety of counter-conditioning strategies to retrain your dog and teach you how to alter their behavior and inspire loyalty and indifference.

We encourage motivation before forcing them unnecessarily – always. Our program is a lot different than most and we know what sets us apart. We train on the desired training gear you want – it’s up to you and us as a team whether it’s appropriate for your dog to be managed with or without certain harnesses, collars, and e-collars.

We will never pressure you into making decisions that would be unethical.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS?

Scientifically, it takes 18 – 21 days to proof any command to a dog so any program that guarantees this in less time is false advertising.

Dogs must go through the 4 different learning stages: Acquisition, Fluency, Generalization and lastly Management before you do not have to rely on rewards like toys and food to motivate them to listen to you.

It takes a minimum of 10 weeks to see a behavioral change occur within your dog and if your dog is experiencing allergy or food sensitivities that can also have an impact on training timelines.

Puppies that have clinical anxiety, reactivity aggression, phobias, severe attachment bonds or fear of containment can take many months before they become manageable.

On average clients book bi-weekly sessions until graduation. This course also includes:

What To Expect

Keep your dog as hungry and food-motivated as you can throughout the program; it will assist a lot.

It may be difficult for us to teach your dog new skills if they aren’t regularly eating food from your hand. Even though some dogs prefer to receive toys or human attention over food, using food is typically the most effective strategy for getting quick results.

Eventually, we will minimize food rewards or fade them. In any situation, your dog should be educated to maintain its neutrality and turn to you for guidance.

While hosting visitors, it’s crucial that they behave calmly and feel secure both when on a leash outdoors and when off a leash within the house.

AKC PUPPY S.T.A.R.

To receive certification the owner and puppy attend at least 6 classes by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator (Kate!) The owner (you!)

To pass the test your puppy must:

Be free of aggression toward people and other pups during the class, tolerate the collar or body harness of owner’s choice and be hugged or held by owner, allow a treat or a toy to be taken away by owner, allow (in any position) petting by a person other than the owner, allow owner to handle and do a brief exam of pup’s ears and feet, walk on a leash and follow owner in a straight line, walk by other people on a leash, sits and lays down on command (treats are ok!), come to owner from when name is called, and lastly stay on a leash with another person while owner walks 10 steps and returns.

Anger Management

It means we have to focus on everything with the exception of obedience (that comes later!)

Time sensitive management protocols must be kept in place to ensure everyone’s safety is a priority.

Then we must eliminate any frustration your dog is exhibiting and then the real learning begins.

Obedience is not what we initially teach for anger management, but it can be helpful to promote in your program. We will approach each dog accordingly to the top goals we have prioritized and create a curriculum that best suits you and your dog.

We have a picture of a German Shepard with his head cocked to the side cutely. The pup is an example of the pups we get for potty training
